My name is Kyla. I am in my second year as an Exploratory student and just decided last quarter that I wanted to be an Education major. I was born in and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio. After graduating from eighth grade, I moved to Atlanta, Georgia for two years. I always knew I wanted to attend UC, even when I was living in Atlanta. I have a one year old son named Christian and he is the reason I want to become a teacher. I have always loved children and my first thought was to become a pediatric nurse, but teaching is my calling. My mom is a teacher and I am able to see up close how so many students are slipping through the cracks of public education and I want to be a teacher who makes a difference. I want kids to love to learn and read and that's why I am going into Early Childhood Education.

As far as my family background, I have one older sister. She recently got married and moved out of state. She has a son named Jeremiah who is 1 and a half years old. I've mentioned that my mother is a teacher. My dad is a pastor and president of the Cincinnati Recreation Commission. He's been in the paper numerous times, most recently because our church is relocating to the old Showcase Cinemas Cincinnati property on Reading Road. If you drive past it on Norwood Lateral, you will see a billboard with his name on it along with the name of his church.

Reflection 1
ISTE NETS-T Standard: Facilitate and Inspire Student Learning and Creativity
Teachers use their knowledge of subject matter, teaching and learning, and technology to facilitate experiences that advance student learning, creativity, and innovation in both face-to-face and virtual environments. Teachers:
promote, support, and model creative and innovative thinking and inventiveness.

Facilitating learning face-to-face is a piece of cake. It has been going on for centuries. Until recently, teachers did not use the internet and virtual environments to advance student learning at all. It is clear that students enjoy using technology and there are plenty of online educational activities available for teachers to use in our classroom. During one of our classes, Mrs. Pentecost showed us the meaning of a webquest. The majority of the class had not heard of it before, but it is an amazing tool that engages students of all ages in learning activities. A computer and internet is needed, but for any classroom that is appropriately set-up, these activities would be nice for a teacher to take a break from instruction.

4. Promote and Model Digital Citizenship and Responsibility
Teachers understand local and global societal issues and responsibilities in an evolving digital culture and exhibit legal and ethical behavior in their professional practices. Teachers:
a. advocate, model, and teach safe, legal, and ethical use of digital information and technology, including respect for copyright, intellectual property, and the appropriate documentation of sources.

It is our responsibility as the educators of tomorrow's future leaders to model and teach safe and legal use of technology. We learned in our Computer Tools class that it is necessary as teachers and educators to exhibit internet safety and monitor students' activity on the computer. Mrs. Pentecost also showed us a video on Copyright Rules. Learning how to use digital information is necessary for use throughout one's educational experience. College students and even some professions still find it necessary to cite their sources and know their copyright privileges.

5. Engage in Professional Growth and Leadership
Teachers continuously improve their professional practice, model lifelong learning, and exhibit leadership in their school and professional community by promoting and demonstrating the effective use of digital tools and resources. Teachers:
a. participate in local and global learning communities to explore creative applications of technology to improve student learning

I am currently a sophomore at UC, but I was in a learning community for the first two quarters of my freshman year. In my learning community, we reviewed before tests and helped each other to better understand the material. Teachers are constantly going through professional development classes and training to learn new ways to engage students. Computer Tools for teachers is a great example of a local learning "[community] that [explores] creative applications of technology to improve student learning." For ten weeks, we have met to learn how to be great teachers and use different online resources to create lesson plans, teach our students, and make our duties easier. From easytestmaker.com to www.microsoft.com/education, Mrs. Pentecost has demonstrated the effective use of several digital tools and resources.
